Cambers are honest, surface is grippy, scenery does the rest. Bring a friend in another car for the photos.

Ortega Highway — San Juan to Lake Elsinore
Orange County, CA · Posted by @apex_sam
About this drive
The tightest set of switchbacks within an hour of LA. The road climbs out of San Juan Capistrano through fast esses, then tightens through the Cleveland National Forest before opening up to the Inland Empire descent. Heavy bike traffic on Sundays — pick a Tuesday morning if you can. The lookout halfway up has the best inland-empire sunset anywhere within 60 miles of the coast.
Recommended stops

CHP usually sits in the truck pullout near Hot Springs Road on weekends.

Caspers + the coast on a clear day. Wide pull-out, room for 6 cars.

Hairpin tightens unexpectedly + cliff edge — late apex it.

Biker bar with burgers + fuel before the climb back. Loud, friendly.

Did this on a Saturday morning and the road was empty until about 10 AM. Worth the early alarm. The lookout is the payoff.

CHP was set up at Hot Springs the day I went — kept it sensible and still had a great time. The Tightening Hairpin sneaks up on you.
The descent toward Elsinore is the reason this road exists. Hells Kitchen at the bottom is dive-bar gold.

Conditions & tips
CHP set up near Hot Springs Road Friday and Saturday afternoons.

Fuel at the bottom in San Juan Capistrano — no gas all the way to Lake Elsinore on the descent.
